Sliding Door Buying Moves Beyond Price

The lowest quotation for a sliding door is not always the least expensive option.

The lowest quotation for a sliding door is not always the least expensive option. Suppliers may be pricing different frame materials, glass types, hardware and installation work. One quote might include site measurement and finishing, while another leaves both to the buyer. Those differences often become apparent only after the order has been placed.

This matters on commercial projects because door installation is tied to the wider construction schedule. The assembly must fit the opening, suit the space and reach the site at the right stage of the project. If even one measurement or specification is unclear, work around the entrance may have to stop while the issue is resolved.

The expected level of use should guide the choice of system. A door at a busy entrance will be opened far more often than one inside an office or apartment. Its weight, the people using it, weather exposure and frequency of movement will determine what kind of tracks and rollers are suitable. A door chosen mainly for its appearance may begin showing problems sooner than expected.

Quotations can make these differences difficult to spot. One manufacturer may list the dimensions and   hardware in detail. Another may provide a shorter price sheet, with several decisions left until production begins. The second quotation can look cheaper simply because it covers less.

Design choices can bring their own complications. Narrow frames and larger glass panels may create the clean appearance an architect is looking for, but they still have to work within the actual opening. Uneven walls or changes in floor height can affect the fit. If the manufacturer becomes involved too late, the project may have to accept a design change or wait longer for production.

Standard door systems are usually easier to plan when the same measurements are repeated across a building. Customisation is more likely when the openings differ or the door has to match   an existing interior. At that point, buyers need to decide which changes are necessary and which ones add cost without making a practical difference.

Looking at a sample can be useful, although showroom conditions reveal only so much. The buyer should open and close the door, check how easily the hardware can be reached and ask what happens when a component wears out. Replacing a roller is one thing. Removing a large section of the assembly to reach it is another.

The quotation itself can reveal a great deal about the supplier. It should clearly show what is included and what remains undecided. The project team needs this information before manufacturing begins so that floor levels, wall openings and nearby finishes can be prepared correctly.

Price will always influence the final decision, especially when a project requires a large number of  doors. Still, the figure matters only in relation to what the buyer will actually receive. A door that fits the opening and handles the expected use may cost more at the quotation stage, but it is less likely to create added expense once it reaches the site.
