Storm-related roofing work remains a major revenue source for many contractors, but the claims environment is becoming more contested and more paperwork-driven.

Property claims may have eased in early 2026, but the cost of repairing damage did not. Loveland Innovations reported that first-quarter claim volume across North America declined, while claim severity and reconstruction costs remained historically high because of labor shortages, wage pressure and elevated construction costs. The company also found that roof damage is increasingly driven by a mix of weather events rather than a single dominant peril, making thorough documentation more important throughout the claims process.

This creates a practical challenge for roofing contractors. A homeowner may see missing shingles, cracked tiles or interior water damage, while an insurer may initially classify the loss as limited or cosmetic. Contractors often become the technical voice explaining what damage exists, what repair scope is realistic and why partial repairs may not solve the underlying problem.

Roofing contractors are finding that storm claims have become more difficult to navigate than they were a few years ago. A 2026 roofing claims analysis points to higher deductibles, a greater use of actual cash value settlements and stricter decisions on matching damaged materials, all of which can affect how contractors are paid. In response, many have placed greater emphasis on detailed estimates, well-supported supplements and clearer conversations with homeowners throughout the claims process.

This environment rewards contractors who are disciplined with evidence. Photos, drone imagery, moisture notes, material documentation and code-related observations can help support the claim file. Contractors that rely only on verbal explanations may struggle when an adjuster or carrier requests proof.

Strong companies will explain roof conditions clearly while respecting the difference between construction expertise and insurance representation.

Research on Alabama’s fortified construction program found that homes built to stronger roof and envelope standards had significantly fewer and less severe hurricane-related insurance claims compared with non-certified homes. That finding is pushing more attention toward resilient roofing methods as insurance markets face climate losses.

The next phase of storm-related roofing work will likely favor contractors that understand documentation, code requirements and resilient construction standards. Customers need help navigating repairs, but they also need honest guidance.
