What are the Benefits of Smart Building

By Construction Business Review | Monday, September 28, 2020

In the construction industry, the demand for smart building is increasing due to its advantages.

FREMONT, CA: Today, most of the buildings have some amount of smart tools in them. But to develop a smart building, much more intelligence is required in the system than it already has. There are many areas in the building that can be fully automated, such as lighting, security systems, energy management, HVAC, elevator controls, audiovisual devices, or a blend of multiple systems.

Therefore, the building owners and the facility managers can determine a structure that will help them to discover the accurate smart building solutions that fit their requirements. Many organizations might want to start small by selecting a few systems to connect with the motive of implementing more options in the future. However, many are also ready to apply numerous systems form the beginning because they know it will save their total expenditure in the long run. Whether to fully apply automation or not can be difficult, so here are some benefits of the smart building that can make the decision-making process a bit easy.

Advantages of Smart Buildings

• Internet of Things (IoT)

In the last few years, the demand for IoT has increased in various industries, and it will continue to do so in the future. The construction industry is also adopting the technology of IoT because of its efficient connection with other devices.

A centralized smart building platform may not be necessary to run or maintain every equipment. But the centralized platform can be beneficial for the facility managers and building owners because they will get a unified user interface and dashboard through which they can control, identify, and monitor the inadequacies in the system.

• Operational efficiency

The connected systems can notify the owners or managers when equipment gets damaged, are inoperable, or decline its efficiency. Moreover, the facility staff can decrease the number of on-site visits to verify an issue's nature by monitoring the systems remotely. They can also diagnose the problems in advance and order the required parts before the equipment gets damaged entirely. The system will decrease the maintenance cost and enhance the efficiency of the workforce and decrease energy costs.

• Building optimization

The facility managers and building owners can collect a massive amount of data that will offer them real-time information about system usage and patterns. For instance, the building can increase its efficiency by automating lighting and HVAC systems to respond to the residence and weather conditions.
