How to Choose the Best Wood Flooring for Underfloor Heating?

Construction Business Review | Monday, August 01, 2022

Additional practical issues with underfloor heating installation must be considered when adding wood flooring as a floor finish.

Fremont, CA: Underfloor heating is a fantastic method to heat a house, and combining it with hardwood flooring creates an elegant and valuable look. However, there are problems to take into account while merging the two.

To make sure users don't have any issues while installing underfloor heating with hardwood flooring, our guide is here to cover any potential issues.

The requirements for each type of wooden flooring vary, though, and certain forms of timber floors, such as engineered wood flooring, perform better with underfloor heating than others. Users must purchase the correct flooring if they want to prevent costly and inconvenient issues later on. Additional practical problems with underfloor heating installation must be considered when adding wood flooring as a floor finish.

Best Wood Flooring for Underfloor Heating

Engineered hardwood flooring is unquestionably a fantastic option when deciding which wood flooring to use with your new underfloor heating system since it mimics the look of solid wood flooring without any drawbacks.

Engineered wood floors are constructed of numerous softwood layers underneath a top layer of solid wood, the thickness of which varies depending on the product's quality.

These layers provide the flooring more stability and enable natural expansion and contraction instead of warping, splitting, or twisting, as might happen with a solid floor.

Is it necessary to let wood flooring acclimate before installing it over underfloor heating?

Before being installed with underfloor heating, all hardwood flooring must be given time to acclimate to reduce the wood's possibility of expanding or contracting.

Lay flat packs of boards in the area where users will be installing the flooring for the amount of time advised by the supplier to do this. Depending on the wood type and manufacturer, engineered wood typically takes 48 to 72 hours to acclimate, whereas solid wood might take up to seven days.

Additionally, it's crucial to heat any underfloor heating system gradually first because failing to do so might harm the wood. Finally, installing underfloor heating with timber floors always provides an expansion space. The wooden floor should have access to an expansion gap (about 15mm) around the room's perimeter to allow for expansion and contraction. With skirting boards, this may be hidden.
