Companies have started to use technologies like AI so that they can quickly detect the defects in a bridge.
FREMONT, CA: The conventional approach taken on a bridge deck to recognize the structural defects is derived from technology. The process is time-consuming as the crews in the ground have to drag a chain across the surface of the road so that they can listen to the hollow-sounding fluctuations and identify vibrations. To conduct this traditional process, the road needs to be closed for days or weeks, and it can even create issues for the road workers, inspectors, and motorists.
However, some companies are trying to apply technology in the process of bridge inspection. They are trying to utilize various smart techniques like artificial intelligence, algorithms, and drones that will help them to recognize the defects and issues swiftly. Moreover, it is estimated that if companies start using technologies in their transportation projects, it will take half the time than it is required when human beings conduct the same job by using the traditional process.
The projects can use unmanned aircraft balanced about 200 feet from above the bridge and use AI to get shots of overhead images. It will become easy to estimate the situation of the concrete decks' bridge joints and overlayments with the help of infrared thermography cameras with FLIR and DJI-made drones.
Moreover, the cameras' infrared sensors can even distinguish the heat fluctuations and electromagnetic radiation that identify the specific areas of stress. To conduct surveillance, the projects need a trained operator and spotters who can observe the surrounding. This is done so that before potholes develop in the area and ruin the structure, they can identify the issues over there.
When the image is captured, the algorithm from AI will transform the data into information that will show the areas that have been detected as decayed. Furthermore, such a combination of technologies will identify the issues that are not possible for a human eye to detect, and it can also change the images into 3D models that will even demonstrate the small irregularities that are there.
