Howell’s Heating & Air

Virginia’s climate presents a distinct challenge for HVAC providers. Long, hot and humid summers, cold winters and significant weather variations place different demands on systems throughout the year. Keeping homes and businesses comfortable calls for a partner that can assess properties, recommend the right system and adapt solutions as conditions change.

Howell’s Heating & Air meets those needs through a full-service HVAC model that brings installation, replacement, repair, maintenance and custom fabrication under one roof. Serving the greater Richmond area, it gives customers access to a single provider throughout the lifecycle of their HVAC systems.

Howell’s tailors its service for residential and commercial customers through dedicated teams. The commercial division works with general contractors and business owners on a wide range of projects, with dedicated project managers supporting installations and a separate service team providing ongoing maintenance and repairs. Residential team focuses on system replacements, maintenance and long-term comfort solutions.

Some homeowners still rely on Howell’s to service systems installed in the 1980s and 90s, while newer customers transition from an installation project to ongoing maintenance and replacements through service programs. Rather than taking a sales-driven approach, the comfort consultants evaluate the property, ask about the homeowner’s concerns and determine what the home requires before recommending a solution.

“We focus on building relationships with customers,” says Bryce Winston, Residential Sales Manager. “We want to make sure they are getting what they really need.”

Precision Solutions for Complex Comfort Challenges

Humidity presents one of the region’s biggest challenges. Many Virginia homes have crawl spaces that contribute to moisture issues affecting indoor air quality and comfort. Howell’s considers whole-home humidity management alongside heating and cooling needs to improve humidity control and indoor comfort.

The region’s architectural diversity adds another layer of complexity. Richmond is home to many historic properties where modern HVAC systems must be integrated without compromising the character of the building. Howell’s works closely with architects and homeowners to preserve original features while introducing contemporary comfort.

Regular maintenance helps customers stay ahead of problems. Through its Comfort Club program, Howell’s conducts seasonal inspections, checks system performance and addresses minor concerns before they become larger issues. Energy-efficient inverter systems, smart thermostats and connected controls give homeowners greater control over their comfort and provide technicians with insight into system performance. With customer permission, technicians can remotely review the system. Problems are diagnosed faster and customers spend less time waiting for resolution.

An in-house fabrication shop produces custom sheet metal components for all applications. It gives the company greater control over quality and allows it to respond more quickly, with certain custom components turned around in roughly 90 minutes.

Consistency That Customers Count On

While technical expertise is vital, customer trust is built through consistency. Whenever possible, Howell’s assigns the same technician to each customer, allowing them to become familiar with the home’s equipment and maintenance history. Familiarity helps technicians diagnose problems faster and gives customers confidence in the person they welcome into their homes.

Employee retention supports this consistency. Many of Howell’s team members have been with the organization for more than a decade, with some having dedicated over 30 years to the company.

The team continues to develop talent internally and preserve the values that have guided the organization for more than 50 years. It works with technical schools, high schools and adult education programs through summer apprenticeships and hands-on training to give young talent a pathway to gain experience and join the workforce.

As Howell’s continues to grow, it is creating more dedicated space for its residential and commercial operations, strengthening its commercial project management team and expanding its residential sales and field teams.

From a home built in 1780 to a modern commercial facility, Howell’s brings the same thoughtful solutions, skilled workmanship and dependable service that offer lasting comfort.

Deep Dive

HVAC Service Built Around Property Conditions

An HVAC purchase often begins after the building has already exposed a weakness. A failed rooftop unit disrupts tenants, or an aging home system struggles with humidity. Sometimes a replacement estimate reveals ductwork that no longer suits the equipment. The buyer rarely chooses a box alone. The decision covers diagnosis, equipment selection, installation discipline and the service relationship that follows. Regional conditions complicate that judgment. Central Virginia shifts between humid summer peaks and uneven winter demand, while its building stock ranges from historic homes to modern residential and commercial buildings. Heat pumps may suit one site, gas heat another. Crawl-space moisture can undermine comfort even when the main system is working. Older structures may also limit duct routes or equipment placement. A provider should evaluate the property before recommending capacity and controls. Standard replacement logic is insufficient when the underlying airflow or moisture problem remains. Proposal quality is an early test of that judgment. Load assumptions, duct modifications, control work and commissioning responsibilities should be clear enough for facilities teams to compare bids on scope rather than equipment price. Vague allowances often reappear as change orders or performance disputes after the system is running. Commercial buyers face a different cost equation. Downtime can affect occupancy and employee productivity, yet premature replacement wastes capital. Service depth matters because rooftop units, split systems, boilers and control components require different technical judgment. A useful provider can distinguish a repairable fault from a system nearing the end of its economic life, then explain the tradeoff without forcing the buyer toward the larger invoice. “Howell’s Heating & Air handles installation, replacement, repair and planned maintenance, supported by separate service teams for homes and businesses.” Response time deserves scrutiny, but speed without preparation has limited value. Contractors that carry common parts, maintain access to fabrication, understand installed systems and dispatch appropriate technicians can shorten the gap between diagnosis and restored service. Custom duct transitions or plenums are often the difference between completing a changeout and waiting for outside supply. For larger projects, coordination with general contractors and project managers becomes equally important because installation errors often appear later as airflow imbalance and repeated service calls. Maintenance should be judged by what it preserves between visits rather than treated as an add-on. Seasonal inspections help identify refrigerant issues, dirty coils, clogged drains and electrical wear before peak demand. Repeat service also preserves equipment history. Returning technicians can recognize recurring patterns and compare present readings with earlier visits. That context supports a more credible repair-versus-replacement recommendation. Connected controls add another layer by allowing remote review of system behavior when a fault is reported, reducing guesswork before a site visit. Howell’s Heating & Air is a strong fit for buyers who need one local provider across residential and commercial work in the Greater Richmond area. It handles installation, replacement, repair and planned maintenance, supported by separate service teams for homes and businesses. Its commercial scope includes rooftop and split systems, while the residential work accounts for humidity and crawl-space conditions in older housing. An in-house fabrication shop produces certain duct components quickly when field conditions change. The Comfort Club adds twice-yearly maintenance, and connected controls support remote diagnostics where customers permit access. For buyers prioritizing local system knowledge and sustained service continuity, Howell’s Heating & Air merits serious consideration. ...Read more
